Mini Review

When it comes to protecting your photography or videography gear, not all cases are created equal. If you're a traveling creative or just someone who needs a tough-as-nails storage solution, the Nanuk 960 Pro Photo Kit might be exactly what you're looking for. In this post, I’ll break down the build quality, use case scenarios, pros and cons, and why this might just be the best hard case on the market for serious shooters.

Rugged Build Quality That Inspires Confidence

The first thing you notice about the Nanuk 960 is how solid it feels. Built from NK-7 resin, this case is IP67-rated meaning it’s waterproof, dustproof, and crushproof. Whether it’s being tossed around by airport staff or dragged across a rocky trail, the 960 takes it in stride.

The PowerClaw latching system is one of the standout features of this case. These latches lock tightly with a satisfying snap and are nearly impossible to open accidentally. Trust me I tried, once it’s locked it’s locked. Add in steel loops for locks, a soft-grip handle, and smooth-rolling wheels, and you’ve got a case that’s ready to help your get your gear safely and comfortably from studio to location.

The Pro Photo Kit: Customization Done Right

This version of the Nanuk 960 comes with the Pro Photo Kit, which includes a fully padded divider system and a lid organizer. These aren’t just tossed-in accessories, they’re thoughtfully designed, durable, and endlessly configurable. Whether you're carrying camera bodies, lenses, drones, cinema cameras, audio gear, or all of the above, you can easily tailor the layout to your specific setup. You can even make your own dividers if you need something more specific. It’s only velcro.

The dividers are sturdy, well-cushioned, and don’t collapse over time (at least not in the 3 months I’ve had the case) like cheaper foam inserts. As a result, this case isn’t just for travel, it’s also an excellent long-term storage solution for keeping your gear safe and organized in the studio when you’re not traveling.

Who’s It For? Real-World Use Cases

The Nanuk 960 shines in a few key scenarios:

✈️ Frequent Travelers

Whether you’re a destination wedding photographer or a travel filmmaker, the 960 is built for life on the move. Its wheels and retractable handle make it easy to haul through airports, and the built-in pressure relief valve ensures it’s flight-ready and won’t get crushed under other luggage.

🎥 On-Location Shooters

If you regularly work on set or in rugged outdoor environments, this case protects your gear from moisture, dust, drops, and rough handling. PLus it also double as a makeshift table, stand or seat if you need to rest your back.

🏠 At-Home Storage

Don’t underestimate the 960 as a studio storage solution. It’s the perfect size. It’s big not not too big while being able to hold a lot of equipment. With the customizable interior, it’s easy to keep your gear organized, protected, and ready to grab at a moment’s notice. I really love the fact that I can put my whole YouTube production kit from cameras, to lights to cameras and a laptop into one case. I can film my content then put my gear away and roll it out of sight. It’s a great way to keep my studio clean and clutter free.

The Pros

  • ✅ Top-tier protection against the elements and impacts

  • ✅ Highly customizable interior for all types of gear

  • ✅ Smooth-rolling wheels make transport easier than you'd expect

  • ✅ Excellent security, padlock-ready and too heavy to be an easy target when fully loaded

  • ✅ TSA-ready design makes it a reliable check-in case

  • ✅ You can cancel your gym membership because hulling this around will bulk you up. lol

The Cons

  • ❌ Heavy when fully packed, you'll feel it when you're hauling it upstairs or over uneven terrain

  • ❌ Bulky, not suitable for carry-on; must be checked in on flights as oversized luggage

  • ❌ Premium price point, but you're paying for serious protection and peace of mind

Is it Worth the Investment?

The Nanuk 960 Pro Photo Kit isn’t for everyone. If you just need a lightweight case for local shoots, this might be overkill. But if you travel often, carry expensive gear, or just want the most rugged protection available, the 960 is a powerhouse. It’s a case that’s built to last and one that adapts to your gear, your workflow, and your clients. The weight can be a downside, but in many ways, it’s also a benefit a fully loaded 960 is not something a thief can easily run off with. If you're serious about protecting your gear, this is an investment you won't regret.
